Mythology Summary
Ullr is Sif's son and Thor's stepson; Gylfaginning 31 says he is such an archer and skier that no one can rival him, beautiful to look at and with a warrior's bearing, and that it is good to call on him in single combat. Grímnismál gives him Ydalir, the yew dales, a name that points to the bow because yew was the bow-wood. Atlakvida has oaths sworn at Ullr's ring, and Saxo's Gesta Danorum euhemerizes him as Ollerus, a wizard who rules in Odin's place for ten years.
Modern Practice
A god for winter, the bow and the duel: modern practice calls him at the start of a season of training, on snow, and before any contest where nerve and word must hold. The Thorsberg chape's owlthu-thewaz, 'servant of Ullr' or 'glorious servant', is possibly the oldest trace of him.
