Mythology Summary

Ogma mac Elathan is the Dagda's brother and the champion of the Tuatha Dé in Cath Maige Tuired, where he is set to carry firewood under Bres, later challenges Lugh by hurling a flagstone that normally took eighty oxen to move, and takes up the sword Orna. The Ogam Tract (In Lebor Ogaim) makes him the inventor of ogham, devised as a proof of his skill and as a speech for the learned rather than for rustics. His epithet Grianainech, 'sun-faced', is glossed in the Táin and Lebor Gabála, and the Gaulish Ogmios has been read as his cognate.

Modern Practice

Worked with for study, for the craft of writing, and for the discipline of saying a thing exactly; ogham staves and the tree letters are the usual physical focus.
