Mythology Summary
Maia is the eldest of the Pleiades and the mother of Hermes, who bears him in a cave and finds him gone by morning to steal Apollo's cattle. She is the quiet mountain mother of a very unquiet child. Rome identified her with its own earth-goddess Maia, and May is named for one or the other — Ovid also derives it from the maiores.
Modern Practice
Maia is called on for safe birth, for raising a difficult child, and for anything grown out of sight. Her practice is the cave: shelter and time before exposure.
