Mythology Summary

Hlín is one of the Ásynjur whose office, in Gylfaginning 36, is to guard those whom Frigg wishes to save from danger, 'and from her name comes the saying that he hlins who is forewarned'. The name is also used in Old Norse poetry as a word for a woman, and in Völuspá 'Hlín's sorrow' is generally read as Frigg's grief for Baldr, so that Hlín is often treated as another name for Frigg. She has no story of her own.

Modern Practice

Hlín is called for shelter and for the warning that comes before harm — protection work with a practical edge: the door locked, the warning given, the person walked home. The practice is to make the refuge real.
