Mythology Summary

Ethniu is the daughter of Balor of the Fomorians, shut away because a druid had foretold that her son would kill her father; in the Lebor Gabála Érenn (the Book of Invasions) Cian of the Tuatha Dé Danann reaches her with the help of the druidess Biróg, and she bears Lugh. The prophecy is fulfilled when Lugh kills Balor at the second battle of Mag Tuired (Cath Maige Tuired). She has no cult and no separate myth beyond this, and the tradition is not consistent about her name.

Modern Practice

Ethniu is called by those whose lives were shaped before they had a say — the arranged, the enclosed, the ones used to settle an old score — and by mothers of children who cost them everything. The practice is to name what was done to you without letting it be the whole story.
