A note on this entry Bhava karaka of the 12th: Saturn. Whole-sign rule: the bhava is the whole sign, so every planet in the same sign as the lagna is in this bhava whatever its degree, and the bhava cusps are the sign boundaries. A Western quadrant house (Placidus, Koch, Campanus, equal) divides the day into arcs instead and can push a planet into a neighbouring house or leave a sign intercepted; the two answers differ and the difference is not a defect. The corrective used by some Jyotish schools is the bhava chalit chart, which re-draws the cusps by the Sripati method. In whole-sign counting a planet at 29 degrees of the twelfth sign is in the 12th bhava even where a quadrant cusp would place it in the first, which is the clearest practical case of the divergence.

Karaka Loss Expenditure Moksha Foreign lands Isolation Sleep Imprisonment Hospitals Feet Bed pleasures Dreams Renunciation The unseen Meaning The twelfth bhava is loss, expenditure, foreign lands, isolation, sleep and liberation. It is the last of the dusthanas and the last of the moksha trine, and the tradition reads it in two directions at once: what is spent and what is released. Its strength is a mark of the capacity to let go, and of the wish to be somewhere else.
