Meaning

Chaturthi is the tithi of Ganapati, the remover of obstacles, and the day of the two great Ganapati observances - Ganesh Chaturthi in the bright fortnight of Bhadrapada and Sankashti Chaturthi in each dark fortnight. The same tithi is classed as rikta, 'empty', and the tradition therefore uses it for the worship of the deity of beginnings while avoiding it for beginnings themselves.
