Seventy-two is the number of the great name and of the nations — Genesis 10 lists seventy, and the tradition counts seventy-two — so the names are read as one for each nation and each language, a name for the whole world and not only for Israel. It is also the first of the four fills of the Tetragrammaton and the value of Chesed, so that the name of mercy and the name of the nations come out as the same number.
