Add the birth month, the birth day and the digits of the current calendar year, and reduce to a single digit. The result runs 1 to 9 and steps by one each year, so a life is read as a nine-year round. The digits of the calendar year summed and reduced give the universal year, which is the same for everyone and is why whole cohorts share a personal year.
The personal year is the forecasting layer of modern numerology. One is a year of beginnings and initiative, four of foundation and work, seven of withdrawal and study, nine of completion and release, and the round then restarts. Practitioners use it to time changes rather than to predict events: the claim is about what kind of year it is, not what will happen in it.
