One of the five non-luminary grahas - Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus or Saturn - in its own sign or its exaltation sign, placed in a kendra (1, 4, 7 or 10) from the lagna. The five results are named for the planet that forms them: Ruchaka (Mars), Bhadra (Mercury), Hamsa (Jupiter), Malavya (Venus) and Sasa (Saturn).
Each of the five makes a 'great person' marked by the character of its planet: a commander for Mars, a scholar for Mercury, a sage for Jupiter, a connoisseur of beauty for Venus, an austere authority for Saturn. The tradition says the native is a ruler or the equal of one, and the five are read as five kinds of eminence rather than five degrees of it.
The five mahapurusha yogas are the classical catalogue of human greatness: each pairs a planet with the house of its own strength. Only the five grahas that own signs can form them, which is why the Sun and Moon, the nodes and the outer planets are excluded.
