Offerings

The commentary describes ẹbọ and the observances that the odù's ìre depends on rather than detailing materials, and it is emphatic that the person's taboos must be kept if the odù is to deliver what it promises. It names Ọ̀rúnmìlà, Èṣù, Ọ̀sanyìn and the Ìyàmi as the powers engaged, because the odù is about the tongue and the tongue is the vehicle of ọfọ̀.

Meaning

Òtúrá is the source of mystic vision: the odù in which a person comes to be able to tell the difference between the noise of ego and the speech of Orí, and from there follows spirit without doubt. It is the odù of the tongue and of incantation, since ọfọ̀ is spoken with it, and it is tied to wisdom, patience and the ethical use of what one sees. Its danger is an inflated sense of its own importance — the commentary's phrase is that identification with anything other than source is the odù's failure mode. It carries peace of mind and freedom from anxiety.
