Meaning
One is the number of unity and, in the Kabbalah, of Kether, the crown that is less a sefirah than the point from which the others are drawn out. Sefer Yetzirah opens by counting ten sephiroth belimah and closes them again in one, and the tradition's arithmetic begins where counting has nothing to count. The Shema's echad is the same one, which is why the number is a confession before it is a quantity.
