Mythology Summary
Brigantia is the tutelary goddess of the Brigantes, the large tribal confederation of northern Britain, whose name means the high one and who is the land, the sovereignty and the war of a people at once. She is known from seven Latin votive inscriptions, in several of which she is identified with the Roman Victoria and once with Caelestis, and her Birrens relief carries the attributes of Minerva and Victoria; the link to the Irish Brigid is a cognate name whose closeness is disputed.
Modern Practice
Brigantia is called on for the defence of a people or a place, and at Imbolc on the high ground. Her practice is public and collective: the hill, the fire and the gathering.
