A note on this entry Bhava karaka of the 4th: the Moon and Mercury. Whole-sign rule: the bhava is the whole sign, so every planet in the same sign as the lagna is in this bhava whatever its degree, and the bhava cusps are the sign boundaries. A Western quadrant house (Placidus, Koch, Campanus, equal) divides the day into arcs instead and can push a planet into a neighbouring house or leave a sign intercepted; the two answers differ and the difference is not a defect. The corrective used by some Jyotish schools is the bhava chalit chart, which re-draws the cusps by the Sripati method.

It is a kendra and the first house of the moksha trine (4, 8, 12), which is the tradition's way of saying that the home and the heart are where the question of liberation first arises.
