Mythology Summary

Aušrinė is the Lithuanian goddess of the morning star (Venus), the counterpart of Vakarinė the evening star, described in the dainos as the daughter or attendant of Saulė and linked with beauty, youth, love, health and new beginnings; Lithuanian tradition makes her feminine, while the Latvian reflex Auseklis is a male god, one of the Dieva dēli and the groom of Saules meita in the celestial wedding. Her cult image later merged with the Virgin Mary after Christianisation, and the eight-pointed auseklis star is still the Latvian national symbol of the same figure. The name is etymologically kin to the Indo-European dawn goddess, and to Eos, Aurora and Ushas.

Modern Practice

Aušrinė is greeted before sunrise, at the start of a venture or a love: bread, honey, flowers and a silver coin, with the star named and the day asked to begin well. The practice is short, bright and repeated - a morning greeting rather than a rite.
