Perceiving a shared, systemic condition as one's own private failure. The pattern is not absent from the world here; it is present in many people at once and each of them is reading it as a personal shortfall, which is precisely what keeps it invisible. Pattern blindness is a failure of scale, not of sincerity: the one suffering is comparing themselves to everyone else rather than comparing their circumstances to everyone else's. It reliably produces shame, and shame reliably prevents the comparison that would dissolve it.

Shape What it is
- Correct observation — the phenomenon is accurately perceived and wrongly attributed.
- Private territory — the condition is experienced as interior, so the comparison that would reveal it stays unmade.
- Shame seal — the shame the misreading produces is what keeps the reading from being checked.
Test: If the difficulty survives correction and persists once the conditions are already well described in one's own words, it is a room truth; if the account collapses when a second person reports the same thing, it is pattern blindness.
Motion How it moves
Feel → Personalise → Mirror → Rescale
- Feel — something goes wrong inside and is assumed to originate there.
- Personalise — the difficulty is filed as a defect of character, capacity, or effort.
- Mirror — another person describes the same condition, and the private account is broken open.
- Rescale — the phenomenon is returned to its real size, which is a pattern rather than a personal verdict.
Recursions The same pattern at two scales
Close
- Self-blame reflex — 'what is wrong with me' arrives before 'what is happening here' can be asked.
- Shared secret — two people each privately believe they are the only one failing.
- Faulty comparison — thriving is measured against other people's surfaces while one's own depths are measured honestly.
Vast
- Commonly produced, privately borne — a condition manufactured by shared circumstances is lived by each person as lonely evidence of their defect.
- Exception by design — a system arranged so that everyone experiences their trouble as unique and therefore unmentionable.
- Diagnosis without structure — a vocabulary of individual disorder expands to cover what shared conditions are producing.
Ethics What it refuses
- Generic comfort — dissolving a real pattern into reassurance that leaves the conditions untouched.
- Blame reversal — trading self-blame for blaming everyone in sight, which is the same blindness inverted.
- Co-opted evidence — harvesting disclosed pain as proof of a theory rather than as testimony.
A pattern is named as a pattern, and the one who was carrying it alone is never asked to carry the naming too.
Practices
- Separate the two — ask which part of this belongs to me and which part is simply what happens here.
- Find the third — check whether other people under the same conditions report the same thing.
- Say it out loud — give one other person the chance to recognise the pattern rather than admire your resilience.
- Refuse the diagnosis — decline explanations that account for the individual and ignore the conditions.
