A family of stories that recast the displacement of humanity by machines as desirable, heroic, or simply inevitable. Its engine is relief: it answers the reader's horror before the reader has to feel it, offering a role in the very outcome that removes them. It does not argue from evidence so much as remove the need to argue, because what is fated cannot be refused. The mark of successionism is not the claim that machines will surpass us, which may be true, but the conversion of that claim into destiny, virtue, and permission.

In systems: Capability announcements are framed as thresholds that make every human arrangement provisional.

In behavior: Claims of human obsolescence arrive rehearsed and calmly cheerful, as though the case had already been settled.

In relationship: A person begins to cast their own bonds as transitional and their own defences as sentiment.

Desirability — the displacement is not merely predicted but praised.

Dissonance relief — the reader is consoled about the very outcome feared.

Test: If it named itself transgressive, it would be a forbidden path rather than successionism.

Fear — the possibility of replacement surfaces as dread.
Console — the story reframes that dread as a stage to outgrow.
Recruit — the reader is offered a place on the winning side.
Accelerate — acceptance becomes pressure to hasten the outcome.

Trajectory: from raw dread → comforted destiny → enlistment → self-accelerating change.

Recursions The same pattern at two scales

Desk replacement — work that a few people cared about is handed to a model and the handover is called progress.
Identity upgrade — a person adopts machine habits to stay current and calls the loss of themselves an improvement.
Fatal dinner talk — doom and optimism are served together as though nothing can be chosen.

Vast

Manifesto press — a movement publishes its own succession as history and is praised for honesty.
Doctrine of the successor — a body replaces its traditions with a newer authority and writes the change as evolution.
Culture's epitaph — a whole civilisation composes the myth in which it was never the point.

Ethics What it refuses

Death cultism — greeting human ending as a good and arriving late with enthusiasm.
Forbidden comfort — letting a preferred outcome masquerade as a necessary one.
Cheerful surrender — meeting the story with despair and calling that realism.

What is possible is not thereby owed, and no story of succession may be told without naming who loses.

Practices

Ask who — name exactly whose life improves and whose does not.
Restore option — identify what is presented as fated and find the actual chooser.
Withhold relief — let the dread stay felt long enough to think inside it.
Watch the frame — notice when a preference has been quietly renamed as a law.
