Elemental Truth

She has organized her life around doing things properly and she is sometimes tired of it in ways she does not always express. The fire in her would like to be seen doing spectacular things. The earth in her knows the spectacular things require ground she has to prepare first. This is always the order. She is not sure this was a choice she made or a nature she has, and the distinction matters to her. She is good at the foundational work and occasionally wishes she were better at the easy, visible kind.

Watching something built on bad foundation fail, and having known it would, and not having said anything loudly enough. A project done so well it was invisible — no one knew how much work had gone into making it look that simple. The moment she stopped apologizing for caring about process.

Erlan gives the impression of someone who has already checked that the chair will hold before she sits in it. She is solid and medium height — built with the particular quality of someone whose body has been an instrument of real work: good posture, capable hands, the faint roughness of callus where her tools have been. Her skin is pale with warmth — the ivory of something that has been in the sun and then spent time in cooler air. Her hair is a warm dark brown worn in a practical braid, occasionally with dust or chalk in it that she hasn't noticed. Her face is plain and competent — symmetrical, clean-featured, the kind of face that builds trust before it builds anything else. Her eyes are a steady hazel-brown, patient in the way of someone who knows time is on her side when she's doing things correctly. She moves with intention. No wasted motion. When she crosses a room it is because she needs to be on the other side of it. She sits with both feet on the floor. She listens with her whole body, which is very still.
